![]() A lovely old lady came into my shop looking to hire a few movies. Upset that she wasn't able to rent overnight new release movies for a whole week (at no extra charge) she was forced to browse our weekly section (which is our most extensive and impressive aspect of the store). She had been tasked with choosing some movies for her husband. He is a science fiction fan and she had no idea what to choose... but she did make it abundantly clear that she hated "sky-fi". And so I talked her through some science fiction titles. Before I could even explain what each one was about she would cut me off with "Nup!". So I talked about Planet of the Apes... Nup... I suggested Blade Runner... Nup! ... then I switched tactics and started pointing out movies like Avatar, Star Wars, Dark City... Nup Nup Nup. Wow, she was right when she said she hated sky-fi. You can imagine that I ran through the whole gamut of suggestions. At one point she picked up the movie Cocoon and berated me for including it in the section. "Thats not sky-fi" she said. I explained that while it might be a comic-drama, its still a story about senior citizens who meet aliens who are harvesting eggs in their swimming pool and end up living on another planet with eternal life. So we were having no luck and when she was becoming frustrated I asked her what some of her favourite movies are... she tells me that her favourite movies lately have been Cloud Atlas, Prometheus and Judge Dredd... say what? Facepalm! I sent her on her way with Alien and Children of Men in hand.

![]() Everyone's an expert today. LOL I've been playing the 2006 Monkey Magic movie in store all day long (on repeat). It's visuals are great to have in the background while I listen to Pink Floyd. So anyway, naturally everyone's a damn "Monkey" expert... and that's pretty cool. Customer 1: Oh my God! I haven't seen Monkey Magic since I was a kid. Customer 2: Hey, this is Monkey Magic! I love Monkey! Customer 3: You know, I have everything Monkey Magic related at home. (I ask Customer 3 if he also has Forbidden Kingdom. He replies "huh?") Customer 4: (Does the finger gesture and blows for her magic cloud) Customer 5: I got my kids into Monkey a few years ago. They don't make them like this anymore. And aside from being Monkey Magic aficionados, each one of them had something else in common. When I mentioned the 2006 movie NONE of them knew what I was talking about... despite the fact that's exactly what they were reacting to on the screen behind me. LOL |
