Whoa. What the hell have I just seen? Tyrannosaur has left me completely spent. It's got to be one of the most depressing and unrelenting British film's I have seen in ages. Its heavy stuff. The film is about two wounded souls who come into each other's lives and end up a support for each other. The man is an angry, violent and loathsome man who hates the things he's done but cannot help but do them. The film opens with him kicking his beloved dog to death in a fit of rage. The woman is a beautiful, kind hearted and compassionate spirit who is beaten, pissed-on and raped by her husband. The performances in Tyrannosaur are nothing short of incredible and it's the kind of film that will stick with you for life. Watching it brought back memories of Nil By Mouth, The War Zone and Once Were Warriors. There are no redeeming qualities to the movie and the audiences' only reward is a couple of stellar performances in a dark, bleak and distressing story. There are a few revelations along the way which weigh the characters down even further into despair and I personally feel grateful that a film has come along that offers something so real without needing to soften the blow. The film's title is ambiguous and is left to interpretation... needless to say that you will not find any dinosaurs between the credits. lol
