Salmon Fishing In The Yemen is an unlikely rom-com. It's an absurd title and it's premise is equally absurd and yet it all comes together and works really well. Being a Lasse Halstrom movie you go into it with an understanding of what you're going to get. He makes fluffy films with substance and this is no exception, in fact its one of the more unique of his movies. Ewen McGregor works for Fishing & Agriculture and is invited by an Arabian Sheik to help introduce salmon into the Yemen. Emily Mortimer plays the Sheirk's English representative and together the three of them strive for the impossible. You know exactly where the film is headed and to be honest there are a few let downs along the way (stupid cartoony political characters and a dumb love triangle) but by the end of it all, the film's charm wins out and its message is delivered. Not the year's best by any means but a charming and very enjoyable rom-com.
