![]() When I say "shitty movies" I say it with affection. I have a penchant for shitty movies from the 80s and 90s. Specifically the action ones... particularly the sequels. It was an era of kick-ass fight movies with doosies like Kickboxer, Bloodsport and Bloodfist. Amongst them was Best of the Best, a martial arts movie about a taekwondo team representing America in Korea. It was another formulated rise against adversity story but it worked. It starred James Earl Jones, Eric Roberts, Chris Penn and Phillip Rhee and it was followed by an inevitable sequel, which saw Roberts, Penn and Rhee return in a story of revenge... And that brings me to the third movie. Rhee is the only original player on board and he also directs. Aside from his character being from the previous movies, there is NO story relation whatsoever. Rhee visits his family in a small rural town that's being overrun by a vicious clan of white supremacists. Of course Rhee being a martial arts expert, he takes on the entire lot with the help of the local Sherrif. Its typical rubbish with every cliche in the book... but thats what makes it cool. Sometimes sitting back with drinks and munchies, watching flicks like this is just what the doctor ordered. The film is constructed well enough and it flows. There aren't any lull moments and it boasts a fairly credible support cast such as Gina Gershon, Christopher MacDonald, Dee Wallace, Mark Rolson and R Lee Ermy. As far as 90s action movie sequels go, Best of the Best 3 is a cut above the rest and while Im in the mood I might as well watch number 4 soon. LOL
