I grew up with Dudley Moore's Arthur (and Arthur 2 for that matter) and so naturally the buzz about a remake was disappointing. As with most remakes I couldn't see any point to it. They announced that Russell Brand was cast in the lead and that seemed to be a small consolation. And so with my distaste for remakes I ventured into the new Arthur with trepidation... and now that I have seen it I stand by my question "why bother?". The original still holds up... but the good news is that it's not bad by any means. If anyone is going to step into Dudley Moore's shoes then it's Russell Brand. He's great. And if anyone is going to step into John Gielgud's shoes it may as well be Helen Mirren. She's great too. The movie adopts the same formula and story structure and its just a rehash but it manages to retain the same level of charm and the gags work. Not a piece of shit by any means and worth a look.... but see the original and it's sequel first.
