Truly GOOD teenage comedies are few and far between. For every 'Mean Girls' there's a gazillion shitty movies for the brain-dead clueless audiences. I love a good teen comedy but in recent years I've been substantially dismayed by the lack of quality. FINALLY along comes Easy A. Its great. It seems to be a movie that agrees that the genre has gone to shit and it proudly throws back to movies of the 80s. It's very much an 80s movie actually. Emma Stone is fantastic as a school nobody who unwittingly unleashed a rumour about herself throughout the entire student body. Suddenly the centre of gossip she runs with the notoriety and fans the speculation with more and more juicy rumours. The sad thing is that now I have watched Easy A its likely that the next really good teen-com is a long way off. Hope I'm wrong!
This is a typical slasher movie. It pretty much follows the same formula that most movies of it's kind do... but that's not to its detriment. Laid To Rest is one fucked up, nasty and completely awesome slay fest. The gore is brutal and the suspense is tight. Best of all, here is a new killer that deserves to be included amongst the likes of Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers & co. His name is Chromeskull and he's one scary motherfucker. I had never heard of this until I saw it advertised in an industry magazine and I wonder how well it has fared internationally? No doubt it did the horror festival circuit and was released direct-to-dvd... but it has obviously been popular enough to warrant a sequel AND a prequel. I hope that Chromeskull becomes a franchise because I'm definitely up for more of his carnage!!!!! Kool Stuff!
A Walk In The Clouds is a fairly lousy follow up (in comparison) for Alfonso Arau who's previous film was the romantic masterpiece 'Like Water For Chocolate'. It was a film so thickly textured and beautiful. And so for his next movie he turned to America and cast Keanu Reeves in the lead. While nowhere near as amazing as LWFC, it's still a charming film. The settings are picturesque and the aesthetic is quite stunning. It's just a shame that the story falls a little flat... but hey, its still a nice movie to cuddle up to with your chickee babe if she's not in the mood for subtitles (LWFC is Mexican).
Priscilla Queen Of The Desert was a small Aussie film that became an world wide sensation... so how does a director follow it up?? Well common sense would say DO NOT make Welcome To Woop Woop!! But Stephan Elliot flashed his brass balls and made a movie that proudly sits amongst some of the world's more fucked up movies. Just about everything about it is wrong. Its full of sex, animal killing, incest and disgraceful stereotyping.... and I think its great. Unfortunately few others share my enthusiasm for Woop Woop and it's a shame. Perhaps its misunderstood... or maybe it really is THAT bad. I think its a throw back to Barry Mackenzie in many ways and celebrates the ocker side of being Aussie. Funny, disturbing and bemusing... Welcome To Woop Woop is an Aussie cult classic!! "Give her the pork sauce".
Its been ages since I've seen Krull and tonight i decided to revisit... it has aged a fair bit but its still a cool little sci-fi fantasy. Kind of like a cross between The Neverending Story and Star Wars. Lots of weirdo characters and heaps of laser shooting n'stuff. It was strange to see a youthful Liam Neeson tagging along with Robbie Contrane too. The last time I watched it was on VHS and tonight was the first time Ive seen it on dvd... its a much better presentation. The widescreen definitely benefits and the remastering is nice.
They don't make em' like this anymore!! Fortress is an Aussie film which was inspired by the infamous Faraday school kidnapping in the early 70s. A teacher and her students from a small country school are kidnapped by 4 masked gunmen. They're shoved into a panel van and then forced into a remote cave. Up until this point the story is pretty much as it really happened, however, writer Everette DeRoche does what he does best and spins the rest of the story into a great little genre peice with the teacher and her kids escaping the cave via an underground water system. They walk for kilometers before finding a farm house, only to realise that the kidnappers have taken the owners hostage also. Its a really creepy movie and there aren't too many movies like it. The masked men are pretty scary characers and the violence towards the end is horrifying **** SPOILER **** The teacher and students hack and dismember one of the kidnappers in a most brutal way. I wonder if this scene inspired Guilmero Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone? Anyhow, its a great movie. Rachel Ward's acting leaves a lot to be desired but the themes and delivery of the story is totally enthrawling. Another gem from Everette De Roche... a national icon in my opinion.
Note: The real kidnapping ended with the teacher & students escaping their captors at night. The State Govener of Victoria arrived at the school with the ransom but it wasn't collected. The next morning the men were captured by heavily armed police. The ringleader escaped prison a few years later and staged another school kidnapping at the Wooreen State School in Gippsland.
Here's a rarity for you and what a trip down memory lane it is. I wonder how many of you remember Little Spies from the glorious day of The Wonderful World of Disney... When I was a tyke I used to LOVE this movie. Now watching it as an adult, I understand why. Its a fantastic caper movie for pre-teens (6-10) about a group of neighbourhood kids who stage a heist to rescue a pet dog that's been taken illegally by a maniacal dog catcher. Enlisting the expertise of an old local WWII veteran, played by Mickey Rooney, they put their plan into action and infiltrate the local pound to rescue their mutley friend. It's stupidly fun and if you can bare to leave your adult-shell at the door, your inner child will love it. I recently watched it again and so many good memories came flooding back. Made in 1986, Little Spies has sadly fallen into obscurity. Disney have re-released a whole lot of their classic tv movies but not this gem. I hope they do because it deserves better.
